  • Participants will be able to recall two examples of programs that can be embedded into their offices at their respective institutions.
  • Participants will be able to define common language used related to equity, belonging, and inclusion.
  • Participants will be able to investigate different types of privilege and the impact of access to resources.
  • Participants will be able to apply an intersectional lens to acknowledge individuals' and groups' historical and current experiences with educational inequalities and disparities.

Dimensions of Wellness Pre-Conference Workshop: Partnering with Parents and Families on Student Wellbeing

Monday, November 6 from 8:30 am - 12 pm (Breakfast included)
Registration Fee: $125 per attendee
We often discuss student holistic wellness after students are already in need or – worse – in crisis, but it doesn’t have to be this way. This workshop will provide a framework for proactively addressing student wellness with an emphasis on how we can equip and educate families (and ourselves) in communication response and education before serious issues arise.

Student behavioral health concerns continue to rise at colleges and universities across the country. While we often talk about crisis communication and intervention, the discussion around proactively engaging parents on the topic of health and wellbeing has been more limited. The presentation will share the continued journey that we went through at UMass Lowell and Ohio State University to partner with parents and families more effectively and proactively in supporting student health and wellbeing. The presentation will cover the following aspects of our approach:

  • How respective family programs at each university partnered with campus partners to proactively engage parents and families
  • What emerged from our collaboration and how each prong is supported by specific educational strategies and best practices
  • Overview of specific programs and strategies that were implemented
Through participation in this session, conference attendees will:
  • Discuss the rationale for engaging parents and families in behavioral health prevention efforts on campus
  • Gain insight into student behavioral health issues and how parents/families can help support their student
  • Learn strategies to approach and maximize inter-office collaboration to support student health and wellbeing
  • Learn specific ways that each campus partnered with families and how our approach can be adapted to their campuses
  • Apply new knowledge and ideas into their own action plan going forward
